Wal-Mart - Always About Money. Always.

OK, here I go, a rant on Wal-Mart. They are weaseling their way into to our town right in the middle of a residential area. It's not just any Wal-Mart, it's the Super, 24 hour version. The town folk are in an uproar. We don't want it. We don't need it. Even people that don't HATE Wal-Mart know for a fact that placing this type of store in a residential area is nuts.
The City of Ontario held a public meeting, just to go through the motions for the residents. But despite intelligent and evidence-based refutes, they voted in favor 5 to 1. Nice. They are obviously in bed with the project. Isn't it always about the money?
This situation is shameful regardless of what any one thinks of Wal-Mart. I personally do not shop there. Although, it is quite hypocritical of me since I do shop at Target and buy plenty of goods that are most likely made in China by little children working 18 hour days. But it's my little way of starting small. If we are going to ever make a difference regarding these types of issues, it has to be consumer-driven. We might have to buy less stuff, and maybe more expensive goods that last longer. Our kids may just have to go without hundreds of toys full of lead paint or harmful plastics. Why do we shoot ourselves in the foot by building these massive everything stores full of dead-end jobs that destroy smaller stores that actually support families with GOOD wages and descent living, and GASP, even provide health care benefits?
*Sigh*

Yuck!

We are by no means rich... we are very much a young family "starting out." Still technically in our "honeymoon" stage of marriage and with a baby to boot (though the baby came a good 10-months after the honeymoon, just to CLARIFY).

And yet we still choose to NOT support or shop at Wal-Mart. I know there are people who find it indispensable, but I happen to know for a fact that there are plenty of other options for shopping.

I like what you said about "buying less" ... quality over quantity, please!

:) Keep up the fight!

I was just about to comment on your blog when you commented on mine :)

My husband and I were just having a conversation about Walmart last night. Since I had Grace, I've been going to Walmart rather than hitting two stores, since Walmart is a one-stop-shop. I typically would go to Kroger (which I LOVE!) and then Target. But Target is downtown in the city and Kroger is somewhere else completely. SO it wouldn't make any sense for me to pack both kids in the car and then cart them around. It would take way too long and never work. THUS, I have been going to Walmart.

I actually hate Walmart. Whenever I go there I get stressed out and frustrated. I said to my husband last night that I would rather spend an extra few cents on something at Kroger than deal with the stress I feel when I go to Walmart. AND, to top it off, Walmart doesn't even have the cheapest prices. Yes, sometimes they do. But overall, I would say not. Especially if you have a Kroger card or something along those lines. Then you can even get rewards, etc. I just think that Walmart abuses those who do not know any better. That is what makes me the maddest about Walmart.

Ok, done with my rant :)

Vic - yup, we've got ourselves a big airport and a fancy mall here too!

XK - rock on. We don't need no stinkin walmart!

Michelle - "I just think that Walmart abuses those who do not know any better."

Stated perfectly! I think Krogers is Ralph's here, no?
