This made me laugh. I really hate nursing with a blanket. But I do it out in public because, a) I don't like people seeing my private parts, and b) I don't want to freak people out too much. But I really find nursing with a blanket is hot, uncomfortable, and confusing for me and the baby. And sometimes, even though I feel that I'm being more than modest, people are giving me the stink-eye. You'd think I'd have it down by now with my second baby, and that I'd be completely confident about it. It's weird. That's all.

That's really funny! You should look up hooter hiders. They are great! Just google it :)

Hooter hiders are great, I agree with Michelle. They are of a stiffer cotton fabric so your baby isn't draped in piles of blanket, AND you can actually look at your baby while you nurse. It's like a big apron, but it comes in cute fabrics.

I get uncomfortable breastfeeding in public, but I remedy it by not making eye contact with anyone in the vicinity. :D Hence, no stink-eyes. Instead I focus on the person I'm with, or my food, or my baby, or the wad of chewed gum on the floor. And when you're not feeling confident just smile. It helps. And people are more forgiving when you smile.

:D Enjoy that little bundle of joy for me!!!

It kills me that in this society where boobs are EVERYWHERE and no one cares if they see them hanging out of a bikini but nursing is taboo and needs to be done in private. Argh!
When I was nursing Johnny I always wore undershirts (like those tank top/camis), so I pulled the undershirt down and lifted the top shirt up and managed to stay very modest without the need for a blanket. I also nursed in my sling a lot which worked well.
Anyways, sorry I haven't been commenting much. I do enjoy reading your updates. James is so sweet and I love seeing the pictures of Hannah interacting with him. Makes me very excited to meet my baby and see Johnny with his sibling.

If I may be so bold as to weigh in on this and at the same time risk vanity in touting my wife as an example...first, when i see women breast feeding with blankets it draws more attention to them than if they did it with care sans blanket. Sara, has a way of doing so without people even realizing she's nursing, it just looks like she's holding the baby really close.
Second, people who have issues with something as natural as breastfeeding can suffer the "torture" of a mother feeding her child. My bleeding heart goes out to them.

Thanks for all of your comments! I guess I feel like the blanket does draw more attention which is another reason I don't like to use it either. And the hooter hiders would have been something helpful with Hannah since I was really shy about NIP (nursing in public) with her. And believe me I NIP everywhere I go, and don't feel too bad about it, I just wish I didn't have such awkward feelings from it. Am I making any sense? XK - I do the same thing, look at stuff, avoid eye contact, etc. That's a perfect description! :)Part of it too may be that my baby is still a newborn and getting the hang of latching on. When they get older the pop right on, you know? And I can't help but feel kind of "national geographic" when I NIP too.

Annie - I so get what you are saying. That makes me crazy too. I

Kind of funny, but whenever I'm about to just nurse without a blanket in public, and Jason is near, he gets a worried look and hands me the blanket. And he's very supportive of me nursing, but I guess he's just trying to help. :)

Another thing is, even with my parents I feel funny nursing around them. I know my mom didn't nurse me for long at all (she gave a try - thanks mom) but she worked and it was 1980 and everyone formula fed. So when I'm around them nursing I feel like I'm weirding them out. Like, OH there she goes again with those BREASTS, always OUT! Sorry mom and dad. hee hee.

Maybe I just need a confidence boost and have someone "critique" my NIP, sans blanket technique, so I am sure that no one is seeing anything. Uh, Jason? :)

Sara told me I should share this story just for fun and very on topic:

One afternoon Sara was nursing Juliana in the car, in a parking lot, and a fellow in his early twenties walked by the car, noticed what she was doing and asked, "Can I be next??" My first reaction when Sara told me was, "Dude, I wish I could have been there to punch him in the face!" Now i just laugh thinking about what a funny weirdo that guy was to say that to a complete stranger.

yeah that guy was weird...i think you did a great job yesterday although i wansn't checking you out :)! you seemed to have it down. The newborn popping on and off and needing help latching on is a bother...but easier to handle w/out blankie.

This is hilarious, I've tried nursing with a blanket, but for the most part, Robby just pulls the blanket off, oh well! It's harder now that he's older, because he gets latched on right away, but now he pops off every 5 seconds to look around at what's going on :P Thanks for commenting on my blog, we are having a bit of an adventure now, I'm trying to get Robby to take naps by himself instead of on my lap, consequently, he's not napping very much, and therefore not sleeping as well. Sigh... Any tips?

That comic is hilarious! It really shows how ridiculous our society can be about something as completely normal and natural as feeding our babies. Get over it people! With my first I nearly always used a nursing cover, but with my second I felt I could just nurse in public without it and still be fairly discreet. Maybe you just get more comfortable with it the second time around.
Thanks for the tag. One of these days I'll blog again and will try to fill you in on a few of my quirks!
